Insta-what? 7 Takeaways

 Okay,

I started my Instagram journey today.  Unsure what that means, but here are my initial thoughts:

1.  What is this?

2.  Who decided that I am or should be interested in World Cup and DIY videos?

3.  Why do I keep realizing I've just watched another 10 videos and can't reclaim that time?

4.  Then, I watch another 10...

5.  I attempted to "Post" but I think I only sent a "Message".  

6.  Okay, I think I see what this is about now.  

7.  My initial #7 was a simple 4-letter word with an exclamation point -  but I don't want anyone to get the wrong impression...

    This is the most accurate description of joining Instagram I’ve ever seen 😂. The platform really does feel like entering another dimension where time completely stops existing. One minute you’re trying to understand why the algorithm thinks you care deeply about DIY videos and World Cup clips, and the next thing you know, it’s somehow been 45 minutes and you’ve learned how to make homemade mozzarella for absolutely no reason.

    Also, the moment where you accidentally send a message instead of posting something is basically an official rite of passage. Instagram said, “You thought you were creating content? Surprise — now someone has seen it privately.” Your numbered breakdown perfectly captures the emotional stages of using social media: confusion, resistance, accidental engagement, acceptance, and finally… surrender 😂 The scariest part is realizing the algorithm somehow knows you better than you know yourself after only ten minutes.

The challenge of challenges

One of the recurring themes in my studies has been the tension between structured learning and self-directed learning. The article Optional Embedded Microlearning Challenges: Promoting Self-Directed Learning and Extension in a Higher Education Course (Dennen et al., 2024) explores that tension through a series of optional "tech-flex" challenges that were embedded within a university course. Students were given opportunities to complete short learning activities, earn digital badges, and develop skills beyond the required curriculum.  The researchers observed that although students viewed the challenges positively, participation rates remained low.
