It's, "Who knows you?"

Perry, S. (2026). From views to value: Power dynamics and capital conversion in YouTube language learning communities. The language Learning Journal. Advance online publication.  https://doi.org/10.1080/09571736.2026.2673882

One of the things I found most interesting about this article was its challenge to the idea that expertise alone creates influence.  Before reading it, I probably would have assumed that the most knowledgeable language teachers on YouTube naturally rise to the top because of their expertise.  According to the author, however, that's only part of the story.

The article argues that it's the audience who plays a significant role in determining who becomes influential and what information is valued.  Every view, like, comment, and share helps shape a creator's credibility and visibility.  In other words, the audience's produsage helps decide which voices gain authority within the community.

In my prior life, I worked with managers and trainers who were extremely knowledgeable and experienced but struggled to gain influence.  Conversely, I also worked with individuals whose greatest strength was their ability to connect with people and build trust.  Expertise alone rarely created credibility.  Credibility emerged when others recognized, accepted, and validated that expertise.  The same dynamic appears to exist within YouTube learning communities.

Another aspect of the article that resonated with me was the discussion about audience comments.  Some comments praised creators, others challenged them, and many contributed additional perspectives.  This reminded me of my most effective training sessions where learning became a conversation rather than a lecture.  The most rewarding learning environments often involve participants actively engaging with ideas instead of passively receiving information.

My biggest takeaway from this article is that learning communities are not built by experts and expertise alone.  Whether on a casino floor, in a training room, or on YouTube, value is created through interaction.  Expertise matters, but community acceptance and participation is what transforms expertise into influence.
